What is a Special Census?
A Special Census is conducted by the Census Bureau between decennial censuses to update the official count of the City’s population. The 2025 Special Census is being conducted at the request of Westfield.
Why is Westfield doing a Special Census?
Conducting a Special Census allows Westfield to receive additional funding commensurate with the growth in population. It is important to know our City’s population count in order to ensure Westfield is getting our fair share.

What should I look for?
Special Census mailings will arrive in the mailboxes of eligible household (addresses within the municipality) beginning on August 5. Below, you will find examples of what these mailings will look like. Each household will receive two letters and two postcards from the United States Census Bureau.
The mailer you receive may vary from the examples listed below.
Every letter/postcard will contain the survey's website address and your unique personal identification number that you will need to use to take the special census.

Why should I participate in the Special Census?
Your participation in the Special Census is extremely important. The information the Special Census receives from you ensures the completeness and accuracy of the results. In addition to the funding, the City of Westfield uses Census data to make a wide variety of decisions to improve our community.
I live in the Township, why is my household not being counted?
The Special Census is being conducted to count the residents of the municipality, not the township.
Will the response be anonymous?
By law, information collected by the Census Bureau is only used for statistical purposes. Your answers are confidential and private. The Census Bureau is required by law to protect your information under Title 13, U.S. Code.
I am not a U.S. citizen, should I respond to the Special Census?
The Special Census counts all people living within the boundaries of the City of Westfield, regardless of their citizenship status, and it's required by law to participate regardless of immigration status.
How will I know someone works for the Census Bureau?
Census Bureau workers who come to your door will present official government ID badges with their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date.
