Residential Permit Types

Residential Single-Family Detached (RSFR)
 Construction of a new single-family home that is not attached to another residential structure.
Townhomes (TWN)
 Construction of residential townhomes or duplex buildings.
Residential Addition (RAD)
 Adding additional square footage under roof to an existing residence.
Residential Accessory (RAC)
 Construction of an accessory structure on a residential lot, such as a detached garage, shed, or similar outbuilding.
Residential Fire Restoration (RFR)
 Repair and restoration of a residential structure following fire damage.

Required Documents

Please ensure all required documents are obtained and ready to be uploaded prior to submitting the Residential Building Permit Application. Failure to provide complete documentation will result in processing delays and may result in the application being voided, requiring resubmittal.

  • Legal Description of Property
     (If Not Located Within a Recorded Subdivision)
  • Site/Plot Plan Showing:
    • Property Lines
    • Location of Existing Structures (Labeling Size and Dimensions from Property Lines)
    • Location of Right-of-way and All Easements (Drainage, Utility)
    • Scale, North Arrow, Address (and/or Subdivision Lot #)
  • Improvement Drawings of:
    • Scale, Address (and/or Subdivision Lot #)
    • Foundation Plan
    • Floor Plan of Each Floor Showing Window Locations, Door Locations, etc.
    • Cross Section Drawing of Structure Showing Footing Through Shingles Denoting Sizes
      or thickness of All Members used in Construction
    • Indiana Stamped Engineered Trusses
  • Elevations of All Sides of Structure Labeling:
    • Roof Pitches
    • Building Height
    • Exterior Building Materials (Including % of Facade of Each Material, if regulated)
    • Any Other Architectural Features Regulated by Applicable Zoning District
  • Landscape Plan
     (or for Single-family Applications, a Signed Acknowledgement of the Landscaping Requirements,
     which will be Inspected for Compliance at the Final Inspection)
  • Septic System Permit and Well Permit
    (New Construction Only) 
    • From Applicable Agency (Hamilton County Health Department, Proof of Connection to State Approved Private Utility)
  • Driveway Cut Approval from Hamilton County Highway Department 
     (if Along County Road)
  • Energy Certificate(s)
  • Erosion Control Application (PDF)

Approval does not relieve the owner, contractor, or design professional of responsibility to comply with all applicable Indiana Building Code, Indiana Fire Code, local ordinances, and referenced standards. Additional code deficiencies may be identified during construction or inspection and shall be corrected prior to final approval.

Inspection Policies

    • Inspections are conducted Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, excluding holidays.
    • Footing inspections are the only inspections that may be requested for a specific time.
    • All other inspections may occur at any time within the 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM inspection window, regardless of the requested time.
    • Commercial Final inspections must be scheduled by phone. Please contact Community Development at (317) 804-3150, option 5.
    • Changes and cancellations must be completed through the City of Westfield Citizens Portal.
    • Same-day cancellations for scheduled inspections will result in a fee equal to a failed inspection. This applies to all inspections except footing inspections.
    • When an inspection is scheduled, a confirmation email will be sent with the confirmed inspection date, even if up to three preferred dates were originally requested.
    • The site must be accessible and ready for inspection during the scheduled inspection window (e.g., debris, standing water, snow, or other obstructions must be cleared). Unsafe or inaccessible conditions may result in a failed inspection and applicable reinspection fees.
